Some thoughts on our blog-ring.

Today, I chided (gently, I hope) those of you who have not posted much on your blogs. I suggested that I was annoyed that you were somehow not pulling your weight in the class. Actually, that is not really the case. Everyone is doing fine. I'm very pleased with the input and effort of everyone. After all, the class is a senior elective. You are nearing the end of your scholastic careers, and I feel as if I am near the end of mine, as well, (though many years probably stretch out before me. . None of us has anything to prove to the other. We know one another's strengths and weaknesses very well. And none knows his own as well as I know mine.

So, why do I chide you at all? I think it is because I want you to join in the fun. The way I visualize our blog-ring is that there are about 5 or so people who are living in the inner city. They post constantly, and comment often. Residing in the outer boroughs are those who post less often, but with equal brilliance. Then we have those in the suburbs. And then, silently stalking polar bear in the arctic regions, we have the Eskimoes. Haven't you people heard the news? You don't have to hunt for food. Just drive to Waldbaums.

Although blogs are nothing new, my sense is that we are engaged in something rather new, and somewhat important. My hope is that after the class ends, our blog-ring will remain online as a lasting, and public record, an archaeolgogical artifact, if you will, of our semester together.

I would like all of you to be part of that record.

  1. I find blogging to be really fun. When I just had my own blog it was kind of difficult relying on people I don't know to read it and comment on it. Now that I am a member of this blog-ring I enjoy posting something and then seeing that I have 3 comments the next day. I find it to be not just fun but rather exhilerating. Call me crazy but I get a thrill from having intelligent conversations about film.

  2. I personally am very sorry actually Mr. Bennett about my lack of posts. To tell you the truth I have about 3 or 4 blogs that are almost done but I never really finished. I'm hoping before I sleep I can post those up. I comment often but posting wise I am lacking so I understand your point. You'd be surprised how much I actually time I spend now reading everyone's interesting blogs. I just feel intimidated because I realize afterward mine looks like crap compared to them. Now no longer- I am going to go on a blog marathon now

  3. I find the entire movie blog network idea to be wonderful. Considering that I'm a blogger myself (although not as often as I wished I was), I admire your bold endeavor of bringing blogging to the classroom.

  4. Due to the fact that my posts are so scarce (my desire may be as well), I try to make all of my posts absolutely epic. I just want everyone to know that more posts will be on the way about movies such as Hot Fuzz, In Bruges, The Seventh Seal, and Signs. I assure you, they all have a chance to be epic.

  5. I really like this blog more than having more formal assignments because it gives me freedom to do what I want and write more independent thoughts and expand my horizon beyond the films we see in class or having to take one singular idea and make it into a theme of a long paper rather than analyzing short snippets of the film in less depth.

I also like that it is accessible to everyone and that this will last after we graduate so we will be part of history and we will be famous (or infamous) possibly and we can look back on when we were 17 or 18 and how ridiculous we sounded many years from now. I hope everyone will start posting more.

Steve and Arun, your posts are always epic so I am waiting for more because they are always awesome.

  6. Jimmy, I just put up the hot fuzz one. I really think its epicness is less than the others but more are on the way.

  8. Mr. Bennett, you're attempt to guilt us into blogging again is a complete success... at least for one day. You're going to need some new techniques if the blog activity is going to stay like this.

  9. I have many arrows in my quiver, old friend. It's possible you guys might find out you like blogging and you won't need me to "guilt" you into it.

But, don't worry. If the guilt doesn't work, I have a great fall back strategy: brutal violence.

  10. I'm surprised Kenley gave you a compliment after all the trouble you gave him in both terms of Global History.
Go invent your own social experiment so you can gloat about it.

  11. Hahaha Danny White, couldn't have put it better myself!

Oh yes, those old Global History classes back in Freshman year.... Oh the Nostalgia is creeping up on me again ;-)

  12. I have fond memories of your freshman year also. And though Danny claims that poor Kenley suffered under my lash, I recall nothing of the sort. I enjoyed his personality and his contributions to the class. I thank him for his kind words and I trust they are the best evidence that he too recalls our time together fondly.

  13. Haha yes freshman year global truly a great class full of fond memories and I'm surprised as well Ken responded. I will make sure I continue blogging so as to avoid brutal violence too as well.
