This movie has some great quotes. We're only about half way through, but here are a few. Tomorrow, try to listen (or read, since I've put the sub-titles on). The Doc gets most of the good lines, like the ones that follow. He gets a bunch more, also. But, Emerich gets the line that sums up the theme of the entire film. Watch for it.
One way or the other, we all work for our vice.
Never trust a cop. Just when you think one's alright, he turns legit.

Those were two really good ones, and I'll bet there are even more to look forward to. Unfortunately, I think some people in the class are more amused by any quote when Dix's name is spoken. Those all seemed to have gotten a better response than anything else.
ReplyDeleteThe Asphalt Jungle is among the best movies Mr. Bennett has shown this year. I really do not see why this film was so unpopular in years past.
ReplyDeleteHow about this quote:
Crime is only a left-handed form of human endeavor. -Emmerich
Thankfully, I am righty.
I agree that this film is among the best shown so far. I can't understand it's past panning. It is not boring, it is not confusing, it is not hokey, it is not meaningless; what could the problem have been? Dix Handley's quick draw was awesome. I like Sterling Hayden. This is the third film I have seen him in, and throughout all 3 he barely emotes anything. Even when he was about ready to shoot Emmerich, all he did was raise his already booming voice up a notch. However, his drawn, somewhat bored face shows more emotion than he himself has to. The story of his characters' troubled lives (I am talking about his characters in this film, The Killing, and Dr Strangelove) is not shown through his actions, but simply on his face. It is brilliant.
ReplyDeleteA thought on why crime is left-handed rather than right handed. The Latin (I think) word for right was dexter. That is why we have words like dextrous to describe skillful movements of the hand. Ambidextrous literally means right hand on both sides. It refers to the equally skillful use of both hands. The Latin word for left is sinister. Sinister today in English has a different meaning than left-handed. It means evil or malevolent and that is precisely why crime is a left-handed endeavor. It is eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeevil.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting Danny! I guess linguistics isn't as boring as I always thought. Now if you don't mind, I am going to use the information you have given to impress many people, and take all the credit for the discovery =P
ReplyDeleteI did like the second quote very much. I believe it may be foreshadowing how the movie may turn ugly for the bad guys. As you said a few times, accoring to the Hays Codes, it will eventually turn out bad for the criminals, but the few symbols and lines in this movie certainly add to the suspense and wonder of what might happen in the end.
